The psychiatric hospital, designed by the famous architect Max Littmann, was opened 110 years ago on Nov 07, 1904, named ‘Royal Psychiatric Hospital' of the University of Munich. Emil Kraepelin was the first director, one of the pioneers of experimental psychological studies in psychiatry. Many of his works were the starting point of new fields of psychiatric research, including psychopharmacology, transcultural and forensic psychiatry or psychiatric epidemiology. Kraepelin had many co-workers who were internationally renowned psychiatrists and neurologists, among them Robert Gaupp and Alois Alzheimer.
Having pioneered psychiatric research, the Munich Department of Psychiatry is still one of the largest psychiatric university hospitals in Germany. The historical ‘Kraepelin building' was reopened in May 1998 following comprehensive renovations and the construction of new buildings, and will now host the conference providing lecture halls, conference rooms and space for recreation, located at the centre of Munich, within walking distance of the central station.
