Meeting 2: Enhancing alcohol-related research in Africa: Possibility for a continental-wide alliance
Africa lags behind in alcohol-related research yet it experiences unproportionate negative effects of alcohol and global alcohol industry influence. The prevalence of substance use-induced Mental health disorders ranges from 3.7 to 13.3% on the continent as compared to 2.2% for the world average. While funding is increasingly getting difficult to get there are no regional or continental-wide fora to share research work, experiences and join efforts to attract funding. In addition, such a fora would mentor and grow a new crop of researchers.
Topic for discussion
- Feasibility of a continental-wide association of alcohol related research
- Existing structures that can enhance such an association
- Key areas of focus for such an association
- Sustainability of such an association
All KBS researchers interested in alcohol related issues on the African continent (whether resident in Africa or elsewhere)
