Dear 2023 KBS Participant,
It's been a great KBS 2023 and we now look forward to a successful KBS 2024!
In that spirit, please return your lanyards to the registration desk. If no one is there, simply lay yours on the table.
If for some reason you cannot do that, please hand yours to a colleague who can return it for you.
Thanks very much in helping our Perth friends leave with heavier luggage!
Best regards and safe onward travels,

Dear KBS participants,
Here comes the final version of the KBS 2023 conference programme before we meet in Joburg next week. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any further changes at this moment. However, if any further changes are needed, kindly inform an LOC member at the conference registration desk.
- Once again, please go through this new version carefully because, once again, we had to switch a number of papers and discussants around to make things work.
- If you are presenting a paper, PLEASE inform your discussant of any changes in your paper or presentation, which might affect them. It’s always important to keep them informed.
Other news, tips and tricks:
- We kindly remind you that the conference dinner is free (!) to all registered participants! But please do sign up for the dinner because it helps us with planning.
- A friendly reminder of the meetings and workshops scheduled before and during the conference. Matej Košir, Director of the Institute for Research and Development (UTRIP), Slovenia, will be hosting an interactive workshop 13h00 to 16h00 on Sunday 4th June 2023. The workshop aims to provide knowledge and strengthen participants’ advocacy skills to impact alcohol policy and decision-making processes. More information about this workshop can be found on the workshop webpage.
- Weather: It is currently quite chilly in the evenings in Johannesburg. Be sure to bring a warm jacket with you. The days are pleasant and are shirtsleeve weather. But if you are going on safari to Kruger or somewhere in Limpopo, the days may get quite warm. So, dressing in layers is good.
- Upon arrival at the airport, it is good “to make a plan”. For example, try to order your Uber/taxi after you have picked up your luggage and then you can walk straight to the pick-up area from arrivals. Or order your shuttle service ahead of time. You can also travel to Sandton using the Gautrain which is a very safe rapid train service. Once at Sandton station you can order a taxi to your hotel or order an Uber. You can also make use of the shuttle services recommended on the website. This is so you know what you are doing after you have walked out of arrivals. If you have not, then ask for help at a normal service counter (airport information desk, car hire). For your own safety, please do not accept unsolicited help.
- Contact numbers in case you are stuck anywhere
- Kim Bloomfield : +27 (0)76 648 4276
- Naiefa Rashied: +27 (0)72 535 1590
- Yolanda Marumfela: +27 (0)78 132 0187
We look forward to welcoming you to Johannesburg and KBS 2023 very soon!
Best wishes,
The KBS 2023 Local Organising Committee

Dear KBS 2023 participants,
The KBS 2023 conference programme is now posted (and will be sent to various mailings lists).
Please note that due to inheritance of multiple versions of the excel template, the formatting of this current version is not yet optimal. These cosmetic flaws will be corrected soon and will be reflected in subsequent versions.
- Please scan the programme to see whether you have been assigned as discussant or chairperson of a session, in addition to the time and place of your own paper presentation.
- if you know you will not make it to Johannesburg, please inform us as soon as possible so that we can make the needed adjustments to the program.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that the full paper upon which your presentation is based is due by 30 April 2023. Please remember that we pre-circulate conference papers to encourage informed discussions during the conference. Also please be sure that your discussant receives a copy of your paper in good time.
Please adhere to the paper guidelines (also found on the website), which include main points such as: paper should not exceed 16 pages (single spaced), it should be structured as the abstract (with introduction, methods, results and conclusions), and should be uploaded as a pdf.
If you have not registered as yet, a friendly reminder to please register as soon as possible.
If you can no longer present at the conference (due to insufficient or no travel support or for any other reason), please inform us of your withdrawal formally via email as soon as possible in April 2023.
Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you to Johannesburg and to a stimulating conference!

Uber is a fast and reliable means of local transportation in Johannesburg. To get from OR Tambo international Airport to the Capital on the Park or other hotels in the Sandton district, please read the following tips:
After you have picked up your luggage at OR Tambo, you can use your Uber app to order a ride to Sandton. After you have ordered your ride (or during or before), you need to go up one level from the baggage collection area. If you take the escalator outside and to the right of the exit from the baggage area, you will walk straight ahead and then when you reach the large circular open area (where you can look below to the ground floor) keep to your left and follow the signs to Parkade 2 of the parking structure. As you enter the building leading to the parking structure, the parking structure will be on your left. The Uber designated pickup area is zone 2E of Parkade 2. This is where your ride will wait to meet you.
Fare to or from Sandton to the airport costs roughly ZAR 325.
Drop-off will take place at the departing flight's level of the airport.

The best paper presented by an early career scientist (no more than 5 years in alcohol research) will be selected by a scientific committee based on its contribution to advancing knowledge in alcohol research and on its theoretical and methodological quality.
The winner is announced and the award presented at the Conference Dinner on the Thursday evening of the conference week.
